Pond Lake Loop Installation Questions

Every question we get asked about pond lake loop installation, answered straight.

Questions

How It Works

How deep does a pond need to be for a geothermal loop?

The HDPE coils need to sit at least 8 feet below the surface at the placement depth to stay below Colorado’s ice formation zone. Shallower placement risks efficiency loss and partial freezing during hard winters. Depth is confirmed during the site assessment, not assumed.

Will the loop freeze in a Denver winter?

A correctly designed loop placed at the right depth stays below the ice formation zone. The antifreeze solution circulating through the HDPE pipe also provides freeze protection. Shallow or undersized loops are the main freeze risk, both are screened out during the qualification assessment.

What makes a pond loop a bad fit for a property?

Shallow water, low volume, poor water chemistry, a long trench distance from the house, or limited shoreline access can each make the setup impractical. If the water body does not qualify, the assessment will identify which factor is the barrier and what alternative loop type may suit the site.

What happens if I delay getting the water body assessed?

Skipping or delaying the assessment and installing based on a visual guess can result in an undersized loop that overcools the pond mid-winter, forcing the heat pump to short-cycle and raising operating costs. Correcting a mis-sized submerged loop after backfill means excavating the trench and pulling the coils, a significant added expense.

Is a pond loop cheaper than other geothermal loop types?

It can be lower cost when a suitable water body is close to the house, because the loop field itself requires no yard trenching or drilling. Total cost still depends on trench length, loop size, and site conditions. A written estimate after the site assessment gives you the actual number for your property.
