How It Works

How do I know if my property qualifies for an open loop system?

The main factors are groundwater supply, water quality, and whether the site can handle the intake and discharge setup. A water flow test and site review confirm whether the well meets the minimum sustained flow rate and whether a compliant discharge point exists on the lot.

What happens if I delay the site assessment?

Without a flow test and water quality check, there is no way to confirm the well can sustain the required gallons per minute. Ordering equipment before that check risks specifying the wrong unit size or discovering a disqualifying condition after costs are already committed.

What water quality problems can affect the system?

Iron, calcium, and manganese are common in Front Range aquifer water and cause scale buildup inside the heat exchanger. Depending on the water chemistry results, a sediment filter, softener, or sacrificial anode is added to the installation scope to protect the equipment.

Does Colorado have rules about where the discharge water goes?

Yes. Colorado groundwater discharge regulations vary by county and govern how return water can be released. The site review confirms a compliant discharge point, return well, dry well, or surface outlet, before any equipment is specified.

Is open loop the lowest-maintenance option?

Not always. Open loop systems depend on water quality and flow rate, so they can need more attention than a sealed loop system if the water carries minerals or sediment. Maintenance needs should be compared against closed loop before a final decision is made.
