Geothermal Heat Pump Maintenance Questions
Every question we get asked about geothermal heat pump maintenance, answered straight.
Questions
How It Works
Does a geothermal system really need annual service if the ground loop lasts decades?
The loop does outlast the indoor unit, but the heat pump, blower motor, circulation pump, coils, and electrical connections wear on a normal schedule. Skipping service means those components fail without warning. The loop’s longevity is not a reason to skip the indoor side.
Can a homeowner just change the filter and skip the rest?
Filter changes help, but they leave refrigerant level, loop pressure, glycol concentration, coil fouling, the condensate drain, and electrical connections unchecked. Any one of those can cause a breakdown or efficiency loss that a filter swap would never catch.
What happens if I delay a full inspection when the system seems fine?
Low loop pressure and degraded antifreeze produce no obvious symptoms until the system short-cycles or shuts down mid-season. A blower motor with early bearing wear fails suddenly. Catching either during a routine visit costs far less than an emergency call in January.
How often should a geothermal system be serviced?
Once a year is the standard expectation. Filters may need checking more often in dusty homes or homes with pets. Denver’s wide seasonal swings make a pre-season visit especially useful before the system switches from heavy heating to heavy cooling load.
What is checked during a full geothermal maintenance visit?
A complete visit covers loop pressure, glycol concentration, coil cleaning, condensate drain, blower motor amp draw, thermostat calibration, refrigerant level, circulation pump flow rate, and all electrical connections, not just the air filter.
Do I need to do anything to prepare before the service visit?
Clear access to the indoor unit and any mechanical room where the heat pump sits. Note any symptoms you’ve observed, unusual sounds, uneven temperatures, or higher energy use, so the partner can check those areas first.
